Hallstatt from Vienna — Complete Travel Guide & Transfer

Hallstatt, the fairy-tale village on Lake Hallstatt, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most photographed places in the world. Nestled between the sparkling lake and the Dachstein mountains, it offers scenery you won't find in any other European village.
Getting there from Vienna: The 265 km drive takes about 2 hours 45 minutes via the A1 towards Salzburg and then the B145 through the Salzkammergut. By train (about 3.5-4 hours with a change at Attnang-Puchheim), you arrive at Hallstatt station on the opposite lakeshore, from where a ferry crosses to the village.
Why a private transfer is better: The train requires changing and the ferry doesn't always wait. With an FDF Taxi, you drive directly to the village centre (or P1 parking at the tunnel entrance), with no detours and room for souvenirs and luggage on the return. Fixed price: from €425.
Must-see in Hallstatt: The Skywalk — a viewing platform 350 metres above the lake with breathtaking panoramic views, the world's oldest salt mine (over 7,000 years old!) with an underground slide and salt lake, the famous Market Square with colourful houses right on the lake, and the Charnel House at St. Michael's Chapel with over 1,200 painted skulls.
Best time to visit: Spring (April-May) and autumn (September-October) offer fewer tourists and milder weather. Summer is busiest — arrive early morning. Winter offers a magical, snowy atmosphere with Christmas lights.
Food and drink: Try the famous Hallstatt trout straight from the lake, Kasnocken (cheese spaetzle), and Kaiserschmarrn at one of the lakeside restaurants. The Seehotel Grüner Baum has one of the best lakeside terraces.
Tip: Combine Hallstatt with a stop in Bad Ischl (former imperial summer residence, European Capital of Culture 2024) or Lake Wolfgang. Our driver plans the route entirely to your wishes. Bookable as a day trip or multi-day journey.
