Hallstatt, the fairy-tale village on Lake Hallstatt, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most photographed places in the world. Nestled between the sparkling lake and the Dachstein mountains, it offers scenery you won't find in any other European village.

Getting there from Vienna: The 265 km drive takes about 2 hours 45 minutes via the A1 towards Salzburg and then the B145 through the Salzkammergut. By train (about 3.5-4 hours with a change at Attnang-Puchheim), you arrive at Hallstatt station on the opposite lakeshore, from where a ferry crosses to the village.

Food and drink: Try the famous Hallstatt trout straight from the lake, Kasnocken (cheese spaetzle), and Kaiserschmarrn at one of the lakeside restaurants. The Seehotel Grüner Baum has one of the best lakeside terraces.
