Vienna Christmas Markets 2026 — Guide, Tips & Transfer

Vienna transforms into a winter wonderland every year. From mid-November to just after Christmas, over 20 Christmas markets light up across the city — from traditional craft markets to modern design fairs.
The most famous is the Christkindlmarkt at Rathausplatz in front of City Hall, attracting over 3 million visitors annually. The giant Christmas tree, festive lighting, and 150+ stalls selling crafts, mulled wine (Punsch), and gingerbread make it an unforgettable experience.
Other highlights include the Christmas market at Schönbrunn Palace with its imperial backdrop, the Old Viennese Christmas Market at Freyung with traditional crafts, and the Spittelberg market in romantic Biedermeier lanes — perfect for unique gifts.
For families, the Christmas market at Karlsplatz offers artisan crafts and children's activities. The Christmas Village at Maria-Theresien-Platz between the Art History and Natural History museums provides a particularly atmospheric setting.
Getting around by public transport during the pre-Christmas season can be stressful — crowded metros, long waits, and heavy shopping bags. With an FDF Taxi, you ride comfortably from market to market or directly from Vienna Airport to your first Christmas market.
Our tip: Book an hourly chauffeur service and let your driver take you to three or four markets. Between stops, we wait for you and drive you warm and comfortable to the next destination. Perfect as a Christmas surprise for visitors from abroad.
Most markets open between 10 and 11 AM and close between 9 and 10 PM. Weekends are especially busy — weekdays are quieter and cosier. Don't forget warm clothing and be sure to try the Viennese Punsch!
